AHALA Children's Rights Foundation
AHALA Children's Rights Foundation (American Hands Aiding Latin American Youth) is a 501C3 nonprofit organization established in 2006 to connect concerned citizens in the U.S. with dedicated children’s rights advocates in Mexico through financial support of educational programs and social services. (AHALA ) is sister to the non-profit organization (CODENI ) (Colectivo Pro Derechos de la Niñez) located in Guadalajara, México, whose mission is to transform the lives of children who work in the streets in Latin America through an integrated support system including education, social work and counseling.〔http://www.ahala.org〕 With the help of donations and sponsorships from AHALA, CODENI is able to work hands-on with street children and provide tutoring, educational and recreational workshops, counseling and basic life skills lessons, which makes attending school and excelling a viable option for Guadalajara's disadvantaged youth.
The following is a breakdown of AHALA's programs:
Education

Each weekday children and youth meet with CODENI educators to expand their learning outside of school. They receive homework mentoring, attend literacy classes, participate in educational and artistic workshops, and recreational activities. Educators initiate and remain in frequent contact with families and teachers, and recommend additional services when necessary.

Social Services

Children in CODENI receive psychological counseling on an individual basis twice each month, which enables CODENI staff to make referrals for more specialized services when there is need. Because the support of family is crucial in helping to improve a child's life, monthly meetings are held in order to update parents on CODENI's activities and encourage their participation with the program.

Street Outreach
Along with their daily work with current students, CODENI educators spend time on the streets connecting with potential CODENI students and their families. During visits, educators work to establish trust and learn more about each family's situation and the needs that they need met. CODENI offers recreational activities and homework tutoring with these children in the streets as part of their preparation to enter the other areas of CODENI.
Recreation

It is recognized that along with their studies, it is also important for children to have time to play and take a break from their responsibilities. The recreational activities offered in CODENI are aimed at developing values and solidarity among the children. CODENI kids also take part in soccer practices and compete in matches with youth from other organizations. Students who remain in good academic standing also have the opportunity to attend bi-monthly field trips, which include visits to parks, the zoo, the movies and fairs.

Workshops

Each semester 10 to 15 CODENI students participate in photography workshops funded by the program (Listen to My Pictures. ) The aim of the program is to enable underrepresented kids to tell their stories with photography. Students use digital cameras to document their lives. In conjunction with taking photographs, the students participate in weekly critiques, learn the basic skills of photo-taking from professional photographers, and have a gallery showing of their work upon culmination of the workshop. The 2009/2010 online gallery can be viewed (here ), and a video about the workshop and exposition can be viewed (here. )
Along with the photo workshops, CODENI children also participate in painting, dance, music and computer workshops on the weekends, offering healthy, safe alternatives to life on the streets.
